1. Hemis Monastery
Hemis is one of the largest and most popular monasteries in Ladakh. This Buddhist monastery in Leh Ladakh is managed and run by the Drukpa sect of Buddhism. It boasts an enormous copper statue of Buddha and beautiful paintings, Stupas, and marvellous Thangkas depicting various aspects of Buddhist culture.
The Hemis Monastery is 40kms southeast of Leh and takes about 1½ hours by a private cab. Taxis coming via Srinagar-Leh highway to Leh can be extended up to Hemis.
2. Thiksey Monastery
Thiksey is one of the magnificent Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. It comprises of a 12-storey building complex and houses almost 500 monks. Thiksey has an extensive and valuable collection of Buddhist journals, books, scripts, and Thangka paintings.
The Thiksey Monastery is located at 19kms from Leh and can be reached by a private cab.
3. Diskit Monastery
Located in the beautiful Nubra valley, Diskit is one of the most beautiful and oldest Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. It belongs to the Gelugpta sect of Tibetan Buddhism and has various Buddha statues, images of guardian Gods, and more astonishing relics.
One can reach the Diskit Monastery in about 4 and a half hours via Khardung La road.
4. Spituk Monastery
Spituk Monastery was founded in the 11th century. It is home to many monks and consists of ancient memorials, idols, statues, and religious scriptures.
The Spituk Monastery is located 11kms from the main town of Leh, and 3.4kms from Leh Airport.
5. Phyang Monastery
Phyang Monastery belongs to the red hat sect of Buddhism and is perhaps the most impressive monasteries in Leh Ladakh. It is located on a hilltop and offers stunning views of the surrounding. It is located about 40kms from Leh and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to reach.
