8 Things to know if you are planning Leh-Ladakh this year
Ladakh- one of the most visited destinations in India, is located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Globally renowned as a ‘Cold Desert’, it is known for its Buddhist monasteries. Well, before visiting Ladakh, here are the 8 things you should keep in mind.
- Cellular Network –
On entering Jammu and Kashmir, cellular network to prepaid connections just vanish. And once you start your journey from Srinagar to Leh, network for postpaid connections too are lost too..
BSNL Postpaid is the only network that can be used in this region, so keep one in handy.
The network strength is weak, so you may experience connectivity issues for voice calls and internet. Some hotels provide wi-fi, but the speed is not so good. - Keep Money Handy –
There are few ATM’s in Leh city, hence you’ll have to wait in long queues. To avoid such hassles, always keep some extra cash with you.
Don’t depend on online banking too, because you know, Connectivity issues. - Photo Identification Documents (PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, Passport and Driving License) –
Ladakh lies near Indo-China border, guarded by the Indian Army. Hence, you’ll come across multiple checkposts and will be required to produce valid ID proofs. (TIP: Never argue with the officials, and/or refuse to show the documents.)
Carry originals and multiple photocopies of your documents to be on the safer side.
If you are driving/riding during the entire trip, you must carry license, PUC, RC book, and Insurance. - Medicines –
There are many medical camps run by Indian army at various locations. Tourists usually have trouble breathing.
Carry medicines for altitude sickness, motion sickness and stomach pain, along with the medications you already take (if any). Always consult your local doctors before you take those medicines.
At any point if you feel dizzy, let your friends or person near you know about the same. Don’t exert your self, take enough rest.
Remember you are there to relax and enjoy and not to rush things, so stay calm. - Charger, memory card, power bank –
Going on a dream vacation, you’ve got to capture every moment to cherish it later. So, need to carry spare memory cards, few power banks, and charger(s).
Don’t forget to carry spike guard as you can charge multiple devices with single power point.
Also, keep a hard copy of contact info of your group members and emergency contact number handy with you, just in case your battery dies. - Traffic in Leh Ladakh –
As it is located in a far-fetched area, there might be a few places where you might get stuck in traffic owing to a single lane road, a wrong turn by a HLV (Heavy Load Vehicle), a landslide or an accident. These traffic jams could be for hours, so be prepared for it. - Food and clothing –
The climate in Leh cannot be predicted, hence it is recommended to carry along certain food materials like – Glucose, Instant maggi, energy bars and dry fruits at all times. If you are stuck, these would be useful for survival. Before starting the journey each day, make sure your water bottles are full.
Always wear clothes in layers, so as you can add/remove layers as per the weather conditions. - Expect the unexpected –
On such high altitude and critical political zone, anything can happen. Therefore, it is advisable to keep 2-3 buffer days in such cases.
